Peasants at the Opera

Day 2 in Vienna:

We met up with Ross again and he toured us around the city. First we went to a sort of arty, Granville island esque place called the Huntertwasserhaus. It is was really funky and had lots of tourist shops. Ross told me a funny story he heard about Michelangelo which I found notable: apparently while artists at that time were being trained they would be tasked with replicating famous pieces of art. Michelangelo was so good at replicating the art that instead of returning the real art he would give them his replica and keep the original for himself! Hahaha! Isn’t that a clever way to gain a priceless collection of art.

Then we went to St Stephens Cathedral, we lit candles there and took in the amazing architecture.

After that we went to Volpension. It is a cafe shop which translates to “full pension”, where grannies make all the food/ pastries/ cakes. It is so cute, basically none of them speak english the the servers are all young and bilingual but the older people have a significant job there and its really awesome to see! Plus they make Bomb food. I was very allergic to it all but from what I was told its amazing… I just got a steam milk which I thought was a fitting drink to get at the granny cafe. Then we walked around the museum district, but I was FROZEN! So we didn’t last too long.

Later we went to the Vienna Opera house to be peasants. By that I mean we spent 3 euros each for nosebleeds standing seats where you couldn’t really even see the stage. I felt so lucky to get to be at a real opera that I had a blast anyways. They had screens with english translations because we saw an opera called Falstaff which was entirely in Italian. It would have sounded so dumb in english. It was about Falstaff, a man who is a bit of a player and was sending the same letter to 2 different girls, and they realized this then planned a trick against him. It was the the old-school version of snapchatting the same picture to multiple people.

MAIN LESSON: Never trust your wife, and never trust your beer with a German.

We left at intermission because we got tired of standing and got our fill of opera singing. Haha it was a blast.
