Budapest Day 1
Today was a LOOONNNGGG day! I woke up at 4:30 am to Uber to the airport because the trains don’t run early enough. It was pretty overpriced but what can I do, I will know that for the future not to book such an early flight. I was a little worried I would sleep through my alarm so I ended up staying awake all night just waiting for morning.
The flight was smooth and I met some girls my age on the bus into town because that airport is about a 35 min drive from the city centre. They were just taking a weekend trip from London, how lucky they can do that! I love Canada but it is very limited for taking trips.
Sabrina met me in town and took me to our hostel. It is like nothing I have ever seen before… It is called the Grandio Party Hostel, we picked it because it is only 6 euros a night but I think a few more euros would have been worth avoiding it hahaha. It was very grunge, and covered in graffiti and marker on the walls. Because it is slow season it was pretty empty so there was less partying going and it even though it was a bit dinghy I did feel safe there. They were very helpful and briefed us on how to navigate the city. Apparently 70% of the taxi’s are run by the mafia in Budapest so it is important to know what numbers to call. If you get in the wrong taxi and they realize you don’t know the language they will charge you incredible rates for 5 min rides. GOOD TO KNOW! They also warned us about how strict drug laws are in Hungary, you can be charged 3 years in prison for a small possession charge. I never do drugs so I wasn’t too worried but I would hate to have a misunderstanding or somehow get framed for that.
There is a gluten free burger market near by so we went there for a late lunch/ dinner then walked around to see the sights of Budapest. There are so many beautiful buildings in this city. I really liked Fisherman’s Bastion, that really stood out for me and is a must see.
At our hostel we met a girl named Sophie from Berlin and se came with us to go get new shoes before the stores closed at 9pm. I tried to wash my converse but I think they shrank when I dried them in the sun and they were killing my feet. Sophie’s shoes broke today so I gave her my old converse. <3 She is Annika’s age so it made me feel like such a big sister. I am so glad they are going to still get good use because they are in pretty great condition and freshly cleaned.
We put on our fresh kicks then went to see the famous Ruin bars of Budapest. We were all so exhausted so we only went to Simpla. It was massive! I have never seen a bar like that, there was multiple themed bars, and spaces to sit down. I think my friends from home would have been amazed by it, I wish we had more interesting places to go out in Victoria, Simpla made Sticky (Vic’s most popular bar) look like a joke.
