Arrived! --> La Fortuna

Continued from the last post because today has basically been a never ending travel day…

We landed in San Jose, Costa Rica and went to find our car rental. The heat and humidity hit you like a wall. Immediately men starting asking us if we wanted Taxis and were a bit pushy which we saw coming so we shut it down.

We pre-booked a car with Wild Riders so they came to get us, the guy was awesome! SOOOO helpful, gave us a full run down of the car, the best routes to take through our trip.

By 11am ish we hit the road. The roads were a bit hectic, lots of merging without signals and motorbikes but Talia crushed it getting us to the route. The roads were not great, many of them were narrow, pot holed and had unclear line markings. But less bad than I had envisioned based on the stories I’ve heard. Talia and I are splitting the driving responsibility.

We expected rain in the afternoon, but it was clear for our whole ride.

We have both been all good so far! We’ve got this!

Everything here is a lush green, it’s so beautiful! There were lots of cows, horses, donkeys, etc on the way.

We didn’t take many photos on the road today because we were focused on navigation, taking in the scenery and avoiding throwing up from car sickness. Kaya has vertigo / vasal vagus nerve issues with travel so she is prone to feeling nauseous from movements but she kept it together the whole ride! WOOT WOOT! Talia gets car sick also but also kept it together during my turn to drive.

On the way we stopped at one of the many little restaurants here called “Soda’s”.

At La Cocina de turo (I have to check the name) we got much more food than expected, I ordered 1 taco and got a whole plate with fries and cabbage so we ate well. All in with ginger ales and large meals it cost under $25 for all 3 of us total.

There are quite a few stray dogs in the towns, I wonder if they have owners but just roam like daisy did. One came and begged to us but had a collar on so when the waitress shoo’d her away we assume she went home.

We arrived at the hostel, settled in, took a swim in the pool and then Matt (our friend from kits who has been travelling in South America) and his sister arrives! Then all fo us went to the welcome “bon fire”. We finally got to experience the rain… it comes down hard all at once! So the bonfire was moved to the lounge bar area and we met some fellow travellers.

Lots of german girls, a girl from North Van and a guy from Spain. They were all really nice. People are super friendly here and open to making friends.

We called it a day early at like 8 pm as we haven’t had a proper sleep in a bed since Thursday night. GOODNIGHT!
